AP- “A federal judge in North Carolina struck down the state’s gay marriage ban Friday 10/10/14, opening the way for the first same-sex weddings in the state to begin immediately.” Read more here
As an advocate of gay marriage, I am absolutely thrilled to be alive at this time to witness these changes. I’ve seen great advances in civil rights and women’s rights. I’ve seen the election of an African American president – and now the recognition and equalization of gay marriages.
It wasn’t that long ago that it was against the law for interracial couples to marry. Two years ago, I officiated a marriage ceremony for a couple that were honoring The Lovings, an interracial couple that were banned from their own state for marrying. Their struggle and courage was paramount in reversing the law on interracial marriage in 1967.
How far we have come. Hallelujah! I have been officiating same sex marriages for my entire career, spanning over 25 years. A few weeks after the ban on same sex marriage was reversed in New York where I lived, I was privileged to perform my first legal same sex marriage. Then I moved to Asheville.
I will be honored to officiate your legal marriage ceremony and I’ll be happy to sign the license for couples whose ceremonies I performed before October 10th.
Let’s celebrate together!
